The Other Side of the Lens

My Photoshoot with Mandy Penn

“Unphotogenic”

For as long as I can remember, I have had a passion for photography. I love the challenge of composing, editing and telling a story with an image. But, I will be the first person to scoot out of the way if someone points their camera my way. I have a long history of awkward photos and I am a champion at blinking at the worst possible moments. Because of this, I labeled myself, “unphotogenic.”

When creating my website I knew that I needed some updated photos to add to my “about” page. Photography is big investment and I wanted to be sure that I went with someone whose work I really admired. It just so happened that during my role as Social Media Coordinator for Colorado Springs Lifestyle Magazine, part of my job was posting features with photo credits. There was one photographer whose work really made me take notice, Mandy Penn.

Mandy is a master photographer who specializes in branding, headshot, and portrait photography. She has a knack for bringing out the most attractive and authentic versions of people. I was excited to find out if she could do the same for me.

Executing a Plan

We met for a consultation a few weeks before my shoot so that we could make a plan. She asked me what types of images I wanted, and then we discussed location, props, and outfits. Her warmth and confidence immediately put me at ease. As a bonus, the following evening she held an open house for fellow photographers to come in and learn more about photography lighting from a company called, Geekoto. I learned quite a bit and met some great people!

The day of my shoot I had some nerves and felt pretty stiff at first. Mandy was so patient and was great about adding humor to help me loosen up. She encouraged me to find poses that felt natural and then she would make small adjustments to improve them. It surprised me to feel so completely comfortable in front of her camera. That was a first for me.

My proofs were available to for me to view the following day. She is fast! I picked my favorite images and she had them edited and ready for download in a matter of days. When I say that these are perhaps some of the most flattering pictures I have ever had taken of me, that is no exaggeration. She made me feel absolutely beautiful.

10/10 – Would Recommend!

It was important for me to share my experience and lift up a very talented photographer. If you find yourself in need of headshots or a full branding shoot, I highly recommend Mandy Penn Photography.
